The Visit Effect

Why dogs (and humans) love to visit!

POPPIN’ IN TO SAY “HELLO”!

“THERE’S MY FRIEND!” Cue full-body wiggles and wild tail wagging, Arty is ready to come say HI! He is happiest with others nearby, though sometimes he is a bit too energetic. Mr. Smarty Arty learned a trick that makes saying "Hello" easier. The goal is for his chin to rest on someone’s knees and get some attention without him being such a wiggle-worm. This works great when his friend is sitting in a chair, or for a child who might be a little intimidated by his wigglyness! In this video, you will see the up and down process of Arty learning his manners when “visiting”.

Now there’s a thought ~

Seeing a real smile—even a furry one—isn't just nice. It’s as essential as food and water. We all thrive on real, authentic connection, and honestly, dogs need it just as much as we do. Let’s explore why this one simple act is so powerful— for both ends of the leash.

Can we say “Field Trip”!? Visiting someone often means traveling. Sometimes it is a short walk to a park or drive to the local coffee shop to meet up with a friend. Change of scenery is good for your pup - and for you too! We can get caught behind the screen or stuck in a rut and, before you know it, another day has passed.

What about practicing being nice around others? Your pup will be calmer and happier when he learns how to interact with all types of people and animals. To be comfortable in various situations takes a lot of practice! It’s the same for us humans. Getting along is important, and sometimes we also need practice being kind and patient around other people. (For you introverts, it might be just a friend or two at a time😊 ) Everyone is fighting their own quiet battles right now, and we could all use a little extra grace.

DITCH THE STRESS! Have you ever seen a dog after a great play-date? There’s a good reason for the term “dog-tired.” They end up flat on their side, tongue hanging out, panting, and totally happy! And while we humans might not look exactly like that when we're exhausted, there is truly no better way to be refreshed than visiting with a friend, whether they have four legs or two.

We can even visit in the virtual world of the internet. Arty’s greeting card business is currently donating 10% of his proceeds to Double J Dog Ranch. They are a rescue for blind and deaf dogs, finding homes for these special needs pups. And if you are not ready to add a 4-legged member to your family? Find their “wish list” and donate a little something. As they say on their website, 100% of your generous gift is "GOING TO THE DOGS". Your gift may help another pup find their forever home. And we know that life is better with friends, for both our dogs and ourselves.

Arty knows first hand (or should we say first paw?) the magic of a good visit. Let’s brush up on our visiting skills and put them to work! Nothing would make Arty happier than seeing you following his lead . . . spreading smiles, tail wags and good vibes wherever you go.
